Red Light on PS3 – How I Fixed Mine

Hey KC here,

If you are suffering from the dreaded red light on PS3 and have been looking for a solution, then I’m glad you have found my web page and I highly suggest you keep reading…

Because I am going to share my story with you on how I was able fix the red light on PS3 – the ups, the downs, the worthless advice I got, and finally the one thing that finally helped me to get completely rid of the blinking red light for good with a simple and quick fix to the red light on ps3.

A little while back I was going through my weekly Saturday routine of getting up early and enjoying some quality gaming time on my playstation. This time, however, it didn’t power red light on ps3up but instead kept flashing red lights at me. I reset it, unplugged it, re-plugged it back in, unplugged all of the cords and plugged them back in, basically everything I could think of , but nothing worked – I had been struck by the PS3 red light of death.

After a few days of seeing the same awful red light flashing, I decided to do some research online. I found that there were a bunch of people struggling from the same red light on ps3 problem or similar playstation 3 problems. However, the only advice I was able to find was to ship it to Sony and have them repair it for me. From what I gathered it would probably cost $150 and I would be without my playstation for 2-6 weeks (although there were many horror stories of people having to pay upwards of $300 for their repairs and it taking up to 3 months to get their console back).

I contacted Sony and they told me to ship it to them and that I had to pay for the shipping and that the shipping cost would not be applied to the red light on ps3 repair. I naturally looked into shipping costs and found that from where I lived shipping to Sony would be more than $75 dollars! By now I was experiencing very high levels of frustration. I had invested hundreds of dollars not only in the Playstation 3 itself, but I had also invested hundreds of dollars into games and accessories, not to mention I was now without my favorite Saturday morning activity.  Frustrating red light on ps3!

I considered just buying a brand new one, but there was one question that kept popping up that I couldn’t come up with a valid argument against: How do I know the same thing won’t just happen again? So I decided against a new one and started researching online how to fix a PS3 myself. After reading blogs and forums for countless hours I had gotten nowhere. All I could find were more people with the same frustrations about the ps3 red blinking light telling me I had two options: ship it to Sony to get it fixed, or buy another one.

Couldn’t Buy a Red Light on PS3 Fix…

I’m a pretty persistent guy so I started visiting some local stores that do electronics repairs. Almost everybody had the same response: they had never done playstation repairs before and they didn’t want take on the liability. I finally was able to find a guy who said he new how to fix PS3’s, but he wouldn’t be able to get around to it for at least 4 weeks because he was so backed up with other repair orders. He did show me a PS3 repair guide however and told me seriously that anybody could fix their playstation 3 errors by following that guide. He then showed me where he got it from online and I went straight home and got it myself. The guide is called “PS3 Lights Fix” by Rob Sheffield.

Honestly, I was quite pleasantly surprised at how simple and easy to read it was. After reading through the guide I felt confident that I could follow its instructions successfully and fix the red light on ps3 myself, so I went for it. Now, I must tell you that the guide instructs you to take the console apart, down to its bare pieces and if I’m being totally honest it racked my nerves a little bit. Having detailed pictures and simple instructions, however, made the process much easier than I thought it would be; and in less than 90 minutes, having used nothing but a screwdriver, I seriously asked myself, “Is that it?” There was only one way to find out if I had indeed fixed the red light on ps3.

I excitedly (yet somewhat apprehensively as well) started plugging in all of the cords and setting up my playstation. Bracing myself for what the verdict would be I pressed power and watched as it turned right on as if nothing had happened, and sure enough the red light on PS3 that blinked at me relentlessly was nowhere to be seen. I followed a couple of suggestions from the guide on how to avoid playstation 3 problems in the future and am VERY happy to say that I have not noticed a single glitch since and was able to immediately resume my early Saturday morning gaming, and continue to now.

That is my story and I hope you got some value out of it.

About Rob Sheffield’s “PS3 Lights Fix” – THE PS3 Repair Guide

Getting the yellow or red light on PS3 – commonly referred to as the red or yellow light of death – is extremely frustrating, something that I can personally attest to. While Sony claims a 1% failure rate, recent studies have shown that it’s closer to a 5-10% failure rate. The yellow and red lights on the ps3 are an indicator of ‘general hardware failure’, which might sound daunting and intimidating. However, 99% of the time this ‘general hardware failure’ can be fixed in less than 2 hours (I’d say closer to 1 hour) by the average PlayStation 3 user out there, even if they don’t know anything about how to fix a ps3.

Rob Sheffield is the creator of PS3 Lights Fix, what I call THE PS3 repair guide to help people solve their playstation woes. Thousands of people were complaining on forums and blogs about their playstation 3 problems regarding flashing red lights or flashing yellow lights. Then more and more people started complaining about their experiences going through the manufacturer (Sony) to get their playstation 3 repairs done. People were saying that the price of the repairs was outrageous (they basically could have just purchased a brand new for the same price) and even more outrageous was the months, yes MONTHS that it was taking for these repairs to be completed.

PS3 Lights Fix by Rob Sheffield was created with the sole purpose of helping people quickly, cheaply, and easily fix their own ps3 and get rid of the ps3 red blinking light once and for all. And this guide is very successful at its purpose because as stated, 99% of the time the necessary repairs can easily AND quickly be done by the average person, without any technical knowledge about electronics or the ps3 console itself.

Rob Sheffield’s guide starts by helping you determine where the problem is, whether it’s the motherboard, the power supply, etc. Now don’t be intimidated by these terms. This guide takes you by the hand with step by step in depth instructions as well as detailed pictures through every step of the process. Quite literally if you can use a screwdriver, you can fix a broken ps3. In addition to the instructions and pictures, you are also given videos of somebody doing the repair in real time, walking you through every step of the repair and showing you EXACTLY what to do and how to do it. From a stuck disc to a blown power supply, you will easily be able to repair whatever the problem is and permanently get rid of the red light on ps3 in less than 2 hours.

Sometimes you need to get new parts. No problem. You are shown precisely how to determine if the part is bad and needs to be replaced. They even tell you exactly how and where to buy the parts so you can get them as quickly and as inexpensively as possible. And of course you are guided by the hand through the part replacement process. Again, don’t be intimidated by the terminology. Remember that 99% of the repairs can easily and quickly be done by YOU.

There is a reason I call Rob Sheffield’s PS3 Lights Fix “THE ps3 repair guide” and that’s because quite simply it is the best, the most comprehensive, the most simply laid out and easy to understand ps3 repair guide I’ve found.

Is the Red Light on PS3 a Power Supply Problem?

If you are experiencing a red light on ps3 then you know that this can be a very frustrating thing indeed.  Not only are you not able to enjoy your playstation but you also have no idea what is causing it or how to fix it.  The fact is there are a number of playstation 3 problems that will cause the ps3 red light.  In this article we will discuss how to determine if the ps3 red flashing light is being caused by your power supply and then what you can do to get rid of the playstation 3 red light for good.

Determining if the Power Supply is the Problem

Power supply problems are becoming more and more common amongst the older playstation 3’s.  The power supplies are simply burning out and once this happens, your only option is to replace it.  It is pretty obvious when there is a power supply issue because upon start up there is a distinctly loud “pop” sound that occurs.  While the sound is fairly easy to detect, if you are uncertain as to whether or not it is the power supply then you can use a multimeter as a sure fire way to know that the red light blinking on ps3 is in fact a result of a bad power supply.  If you do not have or know anybody with a multimeter, any electronics repair shop will have one and can test your power supply in less than 15 seconds.

What to Do After You Know the PS is Causing the PS3 Flashing Red Light

At this point your options are pretty limited.  You can:

  1. Test your luck and your wallet by shipping your PS3 to Sony and have them replace the power supply for you.
  2. Take your console to a local electronics repair shop and have them order and replace your power supply
  3. Buy a new PS3
  4. Purchase a power supply and replace the bad one yourself

I have read and heard so many horror stories from people who have sent their consoles to Sony to get repairs done and they are without their gaming station for 3-6 months and the repairs along with shipping were well over $300.  Local electronics repair shops are hit or miss.  Often times they are small and are well behind with a waiting list.  Sometimes you will really luck out though and have a local guy (or girl) who will make your playstation repairs quickly and cheaply.  Buying a new PS3 is an instant fix but the majority of people aren’t willing to pay for a brand new one.  Making the repair yourself is much easier than most people believe.  The thought of performing just about any electronic repair yourself will typically make people feel anxious and uncomfortable.  With the proper ps3 repair guide it really can be very easy that anybody can do, even if you have ZERO experience with any type of electronic repairs.

How to Avoid Similar Problems in the Future

Power supplies can go out for a variety of reasons, and all of them will result in a playstation 3 blinking red light.  Sometimes it is just old and has sustained all of the use it can handle.  Sometimes it goes out prematurely because of overheating due to prolonged use without any cool down time or not being able to achieve proper ventilation.  A power surge can kill your power supply as well.

To avoid getting the ps3 red light of death in the future keep your playstation in an open area so it can realize optimal ventilation.  Be sure to keep your console plugged into a surge protector.  A bad plug, lightning strike, or having too many appliances running at one time can all fry your ps3 power.  Power down your console for 15 minutes after every 2 hours of use before resuming game play.  Simply following these simple tips will prolong the life of your playstation and can help you avoid the frustration that inevitably comes with a red light on ps3.  The better you treat your electronics, the better they will treat you.

Avoid PlayStation 3 Repairs – Treat Your Power Supply Right

One of the more common reasons for a red light on ps3 is a bad power supply, and this problem is becoming more and more prevalent. A power supply problem will definitely cause flashing red lights and believe me, there are few things more frustrating than this. You can avoid power supply failures and therefore the ps3 flashing red light simply by following a few easy guidelines. For those of you already experiencing playstation 3 problems (including power supply), check out this comprehensive ps3 repair guide, complete with step by step instructions, detailed pictures, and real time videos of the playstation 3 repairs being done.

The first guideline is to keep your console in an open area. Think of it as being claustrophobic and as such it is prone to overheating and malfunction if kept in too tight of a space. Overheating is the most common cause of power supply failure.

The next guideline is to be sure to keep it plugged into a surge protector. For that matter, you should keep all of your electronics plugged into a surge protector. A power surge or a simple short in the outlet is enough to wreak havoc on your ps3 (or any other electronic device) if it isn’t plugged into a surge protector. A surge protector will automatically shut down if subjected to a short or a power surge, protecting everything plugged into it.

The final guideline is to power your ps3 down for 15 minutes after every 2 or 3 hours of play. Being powered up for hours on end without ever having a chance to cool down is a surefire way to blow out your power supply and in turn get the ps3 blinking red light. Plus it isn’t good for you to be staring at the TV for hours on end. And believe me you will not enjoy the frustration that inevitably comes when the ps3 red light of death appears.

If you take care of your power supply, it will take care of you in return. Follow these guidelines on taking care of your power supply and you will avoid ever seeing the red light on PS3, plus you’ll never have to wonder how to fix a ps3.

Avoid Red Light On PS3 – Keep it Clean

Obviously for many of you it’s too late to try to avoid getting the dreaded red light on ps3. Luckily for you, there is a comprehensive guide that will take you by the hand and show you (literally with detailed pictures and real time videos) step by step how to fix the ps3 blinking red light from beginning to end in less than 2 hours. For the rest of you who were fortunate enough to have found this article before being faced with the ps3 red light of death, be grateful and follow these simple guidelines to ensure that you never have to face those frustrating playstation 3 problems.

You must keep your ps3 clean. Buildup of dust and cobwebs makes it much more difficult to keep the inside of your console ventilated. Lack of ventilation leads to overheating which can cause all sorts of problems, most of which will lead to flashing red lights.

You can quickly clean your ps3 using either a compressed air can or a vacuum. If using a compressed air can, simply spray air into the vents of your ps3 to flush out any dust and loose dirt. If you are using a vacuum simply hold the vacuum hose up to the ps3 vents and suck out the dust and dirt. Important: It is critical that you use the low setting on your vacuum. If your vacuum does not have a low setting, DO NOT USE IT to clean your ps3.

You should use one of these two methods of cleaning your ps3 at least 2 times a year (3 or 4 times a year would be ideal). By doing so you are taking a huge step in the direction of completely avoiding a playstation 3 error as well as needing any playstation 3 repairs in the future.
